RUSTON, La. (AP) -- Northwestern State University and Louisiana Tech are close to an agreement for a four-year series of basketball games, starting in fall 2009.
The schools played annually for nine years starting in fall 1976, but last played each other in the 1998-99 season.
The proposed contract calls for each team to host the game in alternate years, starting with a game at Ruston. Northwestern State coach Mike McConathy and Tech coach Kerry Rupp say they like playing local schools. McConathy says that with Grambling and Centenary, Northwestern is now playing three schools within a 90-minute drive.
Tech is renewing a rivalry with Louisiana-Monroe this year.
